How to Preserve Your Precious Eyesight As You Get Older
If you’re like most women, you’re probably religious about getting your annual physical. You’re probably also very good about making sure to get a mammogram, colonoscopy or a dental exam on a regular basis. If you do, then my hat goes off to you for being so proactive about protecting your health.

A food author, cook and mom of four banned her kids from eating sugary foods. She even banned birthday cake and compared these types of foods to highly addictive drugs. In fact, she suggested that sugar has the same effect on the brain as cocaine.

May is Older American’s Month. Since this year’s focus is on activities that will enhance seniors’ physical, mental and emotional well-being, there is no better time to talk about what psychologists like to call “executive functioning,” what it is and why it’s important to protect it.
Are Older Drivers Dangerous? How To Sharpen Your Driving Skills After 60
I can still remember how excited I was when I got my driving license. In addition to giving me an enormous sense of pride and independence, it also was tangible proof that I was now really a “grown up” with all the rights and privileges that came with it.
The Importance of Vitamin C for Older Women… and a Few Problem Signs
For the longest time, I used to associate vitamin C deficiency with scurvy. Maybe this was from watching too many pirate movies when I was younger or my interest in maritime history that came from growing up on an island. But for whatever reason, whenever I heard about not getting enough vitamin C in my diet, I immediately conjured up visions of toothless pirates in the 18th Century.

Prefer an Older Doctor? Study Says This Could Put You at Risk
The oldest working registered nurse in America is 91, and she has worked as a nurse for more than 70 years! As a healthcare professional myself, I admire such a strong dedication to the healthcare field as well as a passion to help other people. I bet this nurse could do her job in her sleep! And if I were admitted to her care, I may take comfort in knowing that someone who is very seasoned in their job is addressing my health concerns. It is the same reason I usually prefer an older, more experienced pilot over a younger one with less flying time under their belt.
Why older patients could be worse off after going to the hospital
Imagine arriving to the hospital with injuries from a fall, hoping to be treated and released so you can get back to your home and your life. But bad turns to worse. You’re almost entirely immobile the whole time, stuck on bedrest, tethered to your IV and oxygen. You’re not eating or sleeping well, and it doesn’t help that you’re in a noisy ward, having your vitals monitored at all hours of the night.
Why older patients need less bedrest and more mobility in the hospital
Bedrest is toxic to older adults. That’s the lesson of a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine that calls out the immobility of older patients in hospitals, bringing attention to the damage it can do. Bedrest is associated with disability, ending up in a nursing home, and ultimately, death, the authors wrote. Half of permanent disability in older adults begins with hospitalization, they said, and 2/3 of them will either be placed in a nursing home or dead within a year of being sent home from the hospital.
Exercise programs for older adults: A growing trend that can help you enjoy a healthier life!
Fitness programs for older adults find themselves among the top fitness trends in the country, and for good reason! In the past, this population has really been underserved by the fitness industry. There’s no reason why everyone shouldn’t be able to enjoy the many health benefits of working out. Before beginning a workout plan, it is important for the older adult to consult a medical professional with knowledge of their medical history. Even though this advice applies to exercise enthusiasts of any age, it is a crucial first step for the older adult.
Is your doctor giving you the time, attention and care you need at your age?
You don't get much time with your doctor, and your doctor doesn’t have much time to think about you. This can lead to problems. For example, doctors might be in such a rush to get to the next patient that they can’t take the time to pick the best medication regimen for their patients. Less-than-ideal meds can lead to side effects and drug interactions. This is especially concerning for older patients.
